Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder. With an onset in childhood it may persist throughout the lifespan and is increasingly recognised in the adult population leading to a rise in referrals for assessment and treatment in adults. Adults with ADHD typically present with a constellation of inattentive, hyperactive and impulsive symptoms and presentation can mimic anxiety, mood disorder or personality disorder leading to some diagnostic complexity. The impairment secondary to core symptoms of ADHD as well as comorbidity is known to have a high cost to individuals with ADHD in adulthood and this workshop aims to provide the tools to make an accurate and robust diagnosis and initiate appropriate treatment.

This one day workshop is a practical and clinically-focused introduction to the assessment and diagnosis of ADHD in adults using presentation, group discussion and cases from the National Adult ADHD Service giving delegates the opportunity to practice the use of diagnostic tools. In addition to assessment, the day will focus on the treatment of adults with ADHD including the use of stimulant medication, an introduction to the evidence base for psychological interventions and current NICE guidance.

  Topics include:

  • DSM-5 criteria for diagnosing ADHD in adults
  • NICE recommendations regarding assessment and treatment of adults   with ADHD
  • challenges of diagnosing ADHD in adults
  • using adult ADHD screening and diagnostic tools (including use of DIVA 2.0 app)
